Port Dufferin is located between Beaver Harbour and Quoddy on Highway 7. Before 1899 the community was known as Salmon River and was settled as early as 1827. Founding families include Balcom, Barkhouse, Hartling, Smiley, and Whitman. This photograph was taken by Edward H. Balcom who operated a store in Port Dufferin in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Edward had this photograph printed on postcards , which he sold in his store. Today, this view is very different, with the cleared fields grown up in forest and most of the houses long gone. Still standing is the flat roofed house on the far left, which is now known as the Black Duck Inn.
