Sober Island is a community about 14 kilometres from Sheet Harbour and connected to the mainland by a short causeway. Because of its location at the mouth of of Sheet Harbour it was particularly suited for fishing. Pictured here is a fleet of swordfishing boats from the South Shore that have tied up at Sober Island for the night. It was common for vessels such as these to come in to the closest port at night, rather than remain on the water. Since 2004, Sober Island has been the location of a growing oyster farm.
