Anglican Church, Spry Bay

The community of Spry Bay is located on Highway 7, between Spry Harbour and Mushaboom. In 1875 the St. James Anglican Church was built from lumber from an earlier church that was on the other side of the Bay. Renovations to the interior were undertaken in c.1905 and believed to have been carried out by Fred Stoddard who was a prominent carpenter from Oyster Pond and responsible for building many churches and stores, as well as family homes along the Eastern Shore. The ceiling was lowered at the time and given its distinctive ship hull appearance. From the time of renovations, the pews were set out from the walls. Pictured here is the view of the church interior taken from the chancel looking at the nave and entrance to the church. On the left at the back is the baptismal font. Seating is available in the chancel on both sides for the choir members. Just 200 metres further down the side road from St. James Anglican church is St. James United church, another beautiful and well preserved early church. Both churches are located just before the present day road to Taylor Head Provincial Park which features excellent walking trails and pristine white sands.

Date: [ca. 1905]
