Ship Harbour is located 68 kilometres east of Dartmouth at the head of the harbour. The John Lewis and Sons peg factory was built in 1918 and closed in 1944. It was established here because of the abundance of white and yellow birch. It was an important part of the community, employing many local men and women. The men worked in the woods, cutting and hauling logs for the preparation of the veneer that was then stamped into various shapes. The factory manufactured shoe shanks, shoe pegs, ice cream spoons, wooden forks and tongue depressors. The factory eventually closed in 1944 after having run out of a hardwood supply.
