DeBaies Cove is situated on the "Loop Road" between Owls Head and Lower Ship Harbour. This small predominately Catholic community was first settled by Jean DeBay, possibly of France, before 1820. His origins have remained a mystery, but the family name, which was changed to DeBaie, is distinct and all descendants of that name can trace themselves back to this small cove on the Eastern Shore. Fishing has long been the predominant activity of Debaies Cove residents. In the past, it was more common that fishermen would have to wait for the ice in the harbour to break up enough so they could set their lobster traps in April. Debaies Cove once had a school, post office, small Catholic church and a boat building shop. During the Second World War an observation station was also located here.
