Owls Head Lighthouse is situated at the outer entrance to the west of Ship Harbour, on a rocky headland that juts out into the passage between Owls Head and Little Harbour and the outer islands. It was first lit in 1912, but between 1966 and 1970 it was replaced by a skeleton tower. The beacon still guides fishermen safely in and out of the harbour. The first lightkeeper was Clarence "Cliff" Hutt, then John Palmer (28 years), Donald Mason, and the last lightkeeper, Fred DeBaie.
