The communities of Three Fathom Harbour and Seaforth are connected through a long history, and indeed at one time Seaforth was part of Three Fathom Harbour. Fishermen from West Chezzetcook and Seaforth had their fishing shacks or “cabanes” on the island connected to the mainland by a causeway. This area is now referred to as “Fisherman’s Reserve” and at one time was only accessible by boat. The fishermen from Seaforth and West Chezzetcook spent the entire week working from the island and then walked home to spend Sunday with their families and attend church. Pictured here is Walter Julien of Grand Desert inside his fishing shack with some visitors who have come to purchase salt fish. Walter was an Acadian fishermen who fished by dory for lobster and ground fish such as haddock, pollock, and cod.
