Citadel, Halifax, N.S., Canada

view page 1 2

The Halifax Citadel, also known as Fort George, was first established as a British defensive post in 1749, and was occupied by British forces until 1906. The fort was re-built four times, with its current star-shaped configuration being completed in 1856, after almost thirty years of construction.

The Citadel National Historic Site of today recreates fort life in 1867, modelled on the famous 78th (Highland) Regiment of Foot, who arrived in Canada in July of 1867 and were stationed at the Halifax Citadel from 1869-1871.
