Admiralty House, completed in 1819, was the official residence for the Admiral in command of the North American Station of the Royal Navy and was a significant site for social and cultural events as well as military planning.
Defending maritime interests was a primary concern with politicians in both Britain and in Nova Scotia. In 1865, the Colonial Naval Defense Act was passed by British Parliament.
