In 1818, George Ramsay, the 9th Earl of Dalhousie (1770-1838) and Nova Scotia’s Governor at the time, founded a new educational institute, open to everyone, called the Halifax College.
Though the school experienced several setbacks and delays, by Confederation it was fully functional with 28 full-time and 28 part-time students. The first Bachelor of Arts degrees were awarded in 1866. Dalhousie College was still located at the north end of the Grand Parade and students wearing their black mortar boards and gowns were a common sight around the city. Few in Halifax had ever seen a game of Rugby until 1867, when it became a popular Saturday afternoon student activity. In 1868, the Faculty of Medicine was established.
