Halifax County Academy, Halifax, N.S.

In the two decades following Confederation, economic prosperity in Halifax led to many new brick buildings being constructed along South Brunswick Street, including the Halifax Academy. The building was designed by Henry Frederick Busch (1826-1902), and opened its doors on January 9, 1879.

The Free School Act of 1864 was Premier Charles Tupper’s vision of ensuring that alongside private school, a free public school system would be available across the province. The additional tax to financially support education was initially met with resistance, especially in rural areas.
