Eastern Shore, Halifax County

Calf & Boys, Moser River

The area between Quoddy and Ecum Secum (at the Halifax / Guysborough County Line) was listed in the early censuses as Bay of Islands, and this included the community of Moser River, which is situated around the estuary where the river meets the ocean, emptying into Necum Teuch Harbour. This area was settled as early as 1809 by Heinrich “Henry” Moser who came there via Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. In the 1838 census the Moser families are all listed as farmers, an indication that the land here was better than in other parts of the Eastern Shore. The community also has considerable inland forestry assets, as well as excellent access to the ocean and salmon fishing. Some shipbuilding also took place here in the early 1900s. Pictured here are the Lowe brothers with their calf at the bottom of the old schoolhouse hill with the cemetery on the right and the school’s outhouse on the left.
