Day's Store, Popes Harbour

Popes Harbour is a small community located along Highway 7 between Tangier and Spry Harbour. It was primarily settled by Roman Catholic families in the early to mid 1800s. The harbour is well sheltered by the large Gerrards Island which was once its own community as well. The family-owned grocery store pictured here was owned and operated by Walter Day in the early 1940s, at that time using a room they called "Grammie's bedroom" for the store. Later on an addition was added to the building, making a store separate from the house.
