Webbers Store, Lake Charlotte

Webbers Store in Lake Charlotte has long been a landmark on Highway 7, positioned at the junction between the highway and the “Loop Road” which heads to the coastal communities of Clam Harbour, Owls Head, and Little Harbour. The first building on this site was originally a dance hall and canteen built in the early 1930s by “Ned” and “Babe” (Grant) Webber. The couple then added gas pumps, and eventually the dance hall became a General Store. In the early 1940s an addition to the original log structure (pictured here) was added as well as a garage adjacent to the main building. Four holiday cottages were built in the field behind the store, and these became known as the “Cumbac” cabins. In the 1950s the cabins were replaced with the Lake Charlotte Motel. In the 1970s additions were again made to the original store, adding room for offices, a hardware store, restaurant and postal outlet. Despite the changes over the years, the “red log store” remains a central feature of the Lake Charlotte community.
