Eastern Shore, Halifax County

Hay Making, Grand Desert

Grand Desert was settled in the mid 1700s by Acadians who cleared and farmed this area with great skill. While the Eastern Shore is not known for its agriculture, the Grand Desert / West Chezzetcook area has some of the most fertile land within the Eastern Shore region and the Acadian farmers took full advantage of this. They sold much of their produce, meats and dairy products at the Halifax Saturday markets, often rising very early to transport their wares to the city. Pictured here are Dennis and Maggie (Roma) Wolfe, Maggie's sister Blanchette Roma, and the school teacher (possibly a Ms. Kennedy) making hay. Dennis and Maggie often boarded the schoolteacher at their house.
