Antigonish Heritage Museum

The Morrisonian was an annual publication produced by the students of Morrison School from 1940 through 1955. English Teacher, Kathryn Mary MacDonald AKA “K.M.” encouraged her pupils to participate in all aspects of the paper’s production including management, circulation, sales and writing.

K.M. was born in 1905, the daughter of Colin and Florence MacDonald, Bay St, Antigonish. She was educated in local schools Mount St Bernard and St Francis Xavier which awarded her Bachelor and Masters degrees. Upon completion of her studies in 1927, she taught at Mount St Bernard. In 1930, she made a to decision to go to New York City where she taught at St Jean Baptiste High School on the Upper Eastside of Manhattan. After a few years in that city, she returned to Antigonish and taught at Morrison, an all-boys school. K.M. was academically inclined and set high expectations for her students to finish high school, and if possible obtain college education. According to a former student ‘KM MacDonald was a bright light in the lives of two generation of students. She expressed a great interest in young people. She was a 24 hour a day teacher—KM would have students drop by her home on Bay Street if they needed extra help or even if they simply wanted to learn about other things. She inspired an interest in the outside world. One of her favourite subjects was telling her boys of the NY scene. She taught a wartime generation of students and continually reminded misbehaving students of the soldiers overseas and the sacrifices they were making.’
