Hooked rug

Although the construction work on the new church was done by the men of the parish, the women had their share of tasks. One of those was to manufacture this handmade hooked rug for the altar. Seven to ten women worked on the making of this rug. The rug was not, however, a permanent fixture on the altar. It was only placed on the altar for special occasions such as visits by the bishop. Another special occasion for the rug to be placed was for weddings, but not all weddings. Most of the girls in the parish were members of an association called “Mary’s Children”. When one of them got married the rug was placed on the altar for her to stand on. If the bride had not been a member, the rug was not used.
