Immaculate Conception Church, Centre East Pubnico

A Present and Historical View of East Pubnico, pages 145-146.

Pierre d’Entremont of West Pubnico was entrusted with the construction of the Immaculate Conception Church in 1875, and the work was completed in 1879. In 1910, Father A. Fortier became the first resident priest, but stayed for only six weeks. It was not until 1912 that the parish had a permanent resident priest, Father Lichtenberger, who served until 1916. There has been no resident priest at Immaculate Conception since 1996.

In 1919, major alterations were carried out. (Where the large pillars currently stand in the church marks the original dimensions of the first church built in 1875. Part of the original roof can be seen on the western side of the first floor.) An addition to the western side included an enclosed entryway and a larger bell tower. An addition to the eastern side included the sacristy and the flower room, and on the southern side, an enclosed entryway. The windows were also changed at this time. The blessing of these renovations as a new church and restoration of the old church was held on July 29, 1919, by Archbishop McCarthy of Halifax.
