Halifax Public Libraries

Halifax City Hospital opened in 1860 and was the first in the city to be available to the general public. Underfunded and with limited open hours, Charles Tupper recommended in 1862 the establishment of a hospital that was funded by both the city and the province.

In May 1867, the Halifax City and Provincial Hospital opened with the province covering two thirds of the operating costs. Unfortunately, access still required multiple referrals from different physicians before being admitted. Arguments persisted between physicians and the province, which eventually led to a strike. By 1887, all physicians were fired and the hospital reopened again as the restructured Victoria General Hospital.
