Halifax Public Libraries

At the time of Confederation, women retained few legal or electoral rights. Their lives were deeply tied to their homes, their family, outside employment and were active in temperance, religious, educational or social causes. Victoria Hall, a retirement home for impoverished spinsters or widows, was founded in 1860.

Within 5 years, many women were inspired by Confederation and became more politically active in union organization, in the suffrage movement to gain the right to vote and demanding greater property rights protected by law.
