Beginning in 1984 Girl Guides of Canada adopted a three-year plan to coincide with the aims of the United Nations International Youth Year. The aim of the project was to become more involved in grassroots development by forming links with Girl Guide Associations in less developed countries. Since the twinning projects were launched, Nova Scotia has paired with a number of countries. In 1986, as part of its twinning with Ghana the funds were used to purchase fruit trees to be planted in Ghana.
