Eastern Shore, Halifax County

Local Transport, Pleasant Harbour.

Pleasant Harbour was originally named Shoal Bay, but the residents had the name changed officially in 1886. The community was settled in the early 1800s by founding families such as Newcombe, Beaver, Glawson and Kennedy. The land here is more productive and less barren than other parts of the Eastern Shore, and the bay was sheltered by the off shore islands. Several families first settled these islands because of their close proximity to the fishing grounds, and then later moved to the mainland. Road improvements during the 1930s opened up much of the Eastern Shore, but the most popular means of travel overland was still by foot or bicycle. Pictured here with her bicycle is sixteen year old Valerie in the spring when the unpaved roads were often very wet and muddy.
