East Petpeswick is one of the communities situated on Petpeswick Inlet, and is well known for its beautiful provincial park, Martinique Beach. Many people enjoy surfing, picnicking, and hiking at this park. This photograph is taken near the East Petpeswick Government Wharf. Ross Young on the left is shelling clams to be packed by General Seafoods, at 5 cents a pound. The clams were then shipped to Halifax and then on to New England markets. The clam “hod” beside Ross held two baskets of clams, these “hods” were made in John Rowlings’ mill, at a cost of 20 cents per hod. The largest boat in foreground was built by Edward Day of Salmon River Bridge and belonged to John Young. The boat is tied to John’s stake (note the three upright poles driven down into the mud).
