The first hospital had become dilapidated and no longer met the needs of the community. It was a two storey building with 32 beds. The second hospital shown as a white colonial style was built in 1931. As the town population was growing larger it was decided in 1963 that a new “modern” hospital was to be built equipped with 90 beds and updated medical equipment.
The old second hospital became a Children’s Home for special needs. An article in the Digby Courier in 1967 says, “The newly painted rooms are in green, yellow, pink and blue and will have draperies of matching colour scheme.” The home is depicted as a warm and caring place where children receive the attention and care that they require.
