Martello Tower, Halifax, N.S.

view page 1 2

Another commission by Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn was the 1796 Prince of Wales Martello tower, which stands at the highest point in Point Pleasant Park. Prince Edward was commander of British forces in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia from 1794-1799 and was also an early supporter of a united Canada. The Tower was constructed to protect the gun batteries on the shores of Point Pleasant from attack by land. By the end of the nineteenth century the Prince of Wales Tower no longer served a military purpose, but was a popular destination for Sunday afternoon strolls and picnics.
