Island Outing, Murphy Cove

Murphy’s Cove is a small community along Highway 7 situated between East Ship Harbour and Pleasant Harbour. The cove is part of the larger Shoal Bay area, and was first settled by Thomas Murphy, who farmed and fished here before 1820. For many generations, a day at the beach meant getting in the boat and heading to the outer islands which have pristine sandy beaches and sheltered coves, as pictured here. They spent the day swimming, hiking, picnicking and playing cards. Today, the Nova Scotia Nature Trust has acquired many of the islands through purchases, donations, and bequests and are continuing to protect the island’s wetlands, rare plants, birds, and old-forest growth.
