This photograph was taken in Hartlin Setttlement, which is located just off the East Jeddore Road. Local businessman Byron Mitchell had a contract for building barges which were used by the Allied forces to loads troops and cargo onto vessels in Halifax Harbour during the Second World War. Doug Mitchell is walking on the wharf, and unknown men are standing on the barge (shown on the left). These barges were designed by William Roué who also designed the Bluenose.
