Sara Corning was born in Chegoggin, Yarmouth County in 1872. Miss Corning was not only a nurse but a hero that went above and beyond to help others. Among her accomplishments, she was a private nurse and later enlisted in the American Red Cross during WWI, and she is credited with saving 5000 Armenian orphans from a Turkish massacre in Smyrna in 1921. In 1923, she was awarded the Silver Cross Medal of the Order of the Saviour by King George II of Greece.
