Honorable Loran Ellis Baker was known as one of the most prominent businessman of Yarmouth as well as the “father of Nova Scotia tourism”. Mr. Baker owned Young & Baker, was the general manager of the Yarmouth Steamship Company, and was president of several Yarmouth organizations, including the Grand Hotel, Western Counties’ Railway, Yarmouth Bank, Yarmouth Insurance Company and more. He was also a legislative councilor and a ship owner. Everywhere he went, Mr. Baker would promote his beloved Yarmouth, making him the town’s first official ambassador.
