Macdonald Consolidated School decked out in banners and flags in honour of a visit from the Duke and Dutchess of Connaught. They, along with Princess Patricia, toured all of the Canadian provinces in their capacity as viceregal family. The term derives from the Latin prefix vice-, meaning "in the place of" and the French word roi, meaning "king". Such a position is largely symbolic, as the viceroyal family is the representation of the monarchy in the colony or territory.
