St. Columba Church pre 1902. Religion was an everyday part of the life of Gaels in Nova Scotia once communities began to form. The church building represented that part in their lives. Heated by wood stoves and lighted with kerosene lamps, they were vulnerable to fire. Communities came together after tragedy to build again as they did in Iona, Roman Catholic, community in 1902 to build a new church.
