Regattas were a familiar recreational scene on the Northwest Arm. The British Navy in Halifax encouraged the development of water sports, including rowing and sailing competitions and civilians were encouraged to join in or grab a picnic basket and watch. Frequent regattas led to the establishment of the yacht and rowing clubs like the Halifax Yacht Club in 1837.
