In 1867, Point Pleasant Park was known as Tower Woods Park, a reference to the military defence batteries and Martello tower on the site. The park was a favourite place of recreation for those who lived in town but could not travel to the countryside.

Pro-Confederation politician Sir William Young (1799-1887), Premier of Nova Scotia from 1854-1860, and Chief Justice of the Nova Scotia Supreme Court, was instrumental in establishing Point Pleasant Park as a place of natural beauty for future generations. In 1866, he obtained a 999 year lease of the land from the Crown for the city’s use and also donated his own money for many improvements to the park.
