Halifax Public Libraries

Dartmouth was founded in 1750 and was incorporated as a town in1873 with a population of 2,191 residents. At the time of Confederation, Dartmouth was a significant supplier of raw materials and manufactured goods including Motts Chocolate factory, three sizeable foundries, three tanneries, two gristmills, Albros Nail factory, three shipyards, various machine shops, a textile mill, Starrs Skate factory, a distillery, and a rope factory. Oland Brewery began operation in Dartmouth in 1867.

Joseph Howe resided at Fairfield and had a direct influence on Dartmouthian’s stance against Confederation. In a speech on May 22, 1867, Howe warned of higher interest rates, manufacturing competition from Central Canada and the loss of self-government.
