Halifax-born shipping magnate Samuel Cunard was on the forefront of the move from sail to steam; his shipping business expanded significantly when he obtained the contract in 1840 to deliver mail between England and Halifax by steamship.
Cunard retired to England and died just before Confederation in 1865, but the city of Halifax would still have borne the mark of his enterprise and his ships would have been a common sight in the harbour in 1867.
