view page 1 2

Converted in 1877, The Queen Street Engine House was home to the Union Engine Company No.6. Fire was a significant destructive force in a growing city made predominantly of wooden structures built closely together. Steam powered fire-engines were a welcomed acquisition in 1861, like this No. 3 Steam Fire-engine pictured on display. By Confederation, Halifax led the Dominion in firefighting equipment and technology.
