Canso Causeway Opening

Discussions about a permanent link between Cape Breton Island and mainland Nova Scotia happened for decades before construction began on the causeway in 1952. After an estimated 23 million dollars and 10 million tons of rock the 'Road to the Isles' was completed in December 1954. The official opening took place on August 13, 1954.
