By the late 19th century, Port Hood was a major shipping hub in Inverness County. At that time, it was considered one of the three busiest shipping ports on Cape Breton Island along with Sydney and Port Hawkesbury. Fish and agricultural products were shipped regularly all over Nova Scotia and beyond.
