The ship Speculator was built in 1864 at the Killam Shipyard in Yarmouth. She was built by Thomas Killam, the son of the well-established Killam shipping family. Mr. Killam constructed, commissioned or purchase anywhere from 1 to 6 vessels each year, adding immensely to the Yarmouth shipping industry. Killam was also elected to the newly formed Canadian Parliament in 1867. Thomas was one of seven men who were considered the "shipping elite" of Yarmouth.
