The founder of the Macdonald Consolidated school, educational philantropist Sir William Macdonald, was very interested in the practical application of horticulture at the school. This is why a large garden was planted at the side of the school, the students were tasked with tending to the garden and some of the produce grown there was used in the school lunches made onsite.
