Admiralty House, completed in 1819, was the official residence for the Admiral in command of the North American Station of the Royal Navy and was a significant site for social and cultural events as well as military planning.
Defending maritime interests was a primary concern with politicians in both Britain and in Nova Scotia. In 1865, the Colonial Naval Defense Act was passed by British Parliament. This allowed British colonies to establish their own naval forces for home defense but also required them to cover the expense. With the end of the American Civil War still fresh in their minds, Pro-Confederation supporters believed that a single Canadian would provide a stronger military defense presence.
