The Head of Bedford Basin provided an ideal transportation route, beginning with Mi’kmaq and Acadian footpaths, then expanding into early colonial roads to the Annapolis Valley. The railway played a pivotal role in the development of the area when in 1855 the Nova Scotia Railway tracks were laid to connect Halifax with Windsor and Truro. Ownership of the Nova Scotia Railway was transferred to the Canadian Government on July 1, 1867, leaving Bedford residents with the promise of an expanded railway system connecting Nova Scotia to the rest of the new country.
