Halifax Public Libraries

Running since 1752, the Halifax-Dartmouth ferry service is the oldest saltwater ferry in North America. The Steam Boat Company ran the long- standing ferry business between Dartmouth and Halifax, employing three steam-powered ships, including The Chebucto, The Sir C. Ogle, and The Micmac. The company’s charter was renewed in 1867, but the added responsibility and costs resulting from the new mandatory Dominion transportation safety inspections prompted the company to sell to The Halifax and Dartmouth Steam Ferry Company Ltd. in 1886.
