In 1859, many of the wooden buildings of Granville and Hollis Streets were lost in a great fire; their replacements built in the more durable fashion of stone and marble.

The Acadian Recorder weekly newspaper began publishing in 1813 and was located on Granville and Buckingham Streets. Under the direction of Hugh William Blackadar (1808-1863), the newspaper voiced its support of a Maritime Union of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island but stopped short of supporting Confederation of all British North American colonies. On July 1, 1867, the newspaper was published with black borders, signifying a state of mourning.
