Halifax Public Libraries

African Nova Scotians lived in many historic communities in and around Halifax, such as Africville, which was known as “The Road” at the time of Confederation, as well as in Preston, Hammonds Plains and Beechville.

The Green Market was an important venue for African Nova Scotian farmers and craftmakers, who came each Saturday to sell produce, berries, fruit and homemade items.

While African Nova Scotians shared the same rights, freedoms and privileges under the British North American Act, they continued to struggle with discrimination, poverty, exclusion from public schools, segregated services and limited employment opportunities beyond basic labour and farming.
