The Admiral Digby Museum had its beginnings in the late 1960’s as a library created by the Digby Library Association. In 1968-69, The Digby Library Association purchased the 1840’s “Woodrow / Dakin House,” at 95 Montague Row. Dedicated members of the library board were inspired by the fact that the Woodrow / Dakin House was of such fine quality. It is “Loyalist” or “Georgian” style architecture and one of the oldest house in Digby. They decided to improve the atmosphere of the “new” library by adding some suitable antique touches in appropriate places. This was the beginning of the present Admiral Digby Museum
.
In 1972, the name of the organizati was formally changed from the Digby Library Association to the Admiral Digby Library & Historical Society. The Woodrow / Dakin House now became the Admiral Digby Museum to honour Admiral Sir Robert Digby
.
Finally in 1977, the Digby Library Association transferred ownership of the building to the Admiral Digby Library & Histor Society. The Mission of this organization is to encourage research in, and awareness of, the history of the Town of Digby and Digby County. The Admiral Digby Museum has been operating for over forty years offering and displaying a wide range of artifacts and archives. There are seven exhibit rooms, as well as, the Genealogy Department / Archives which holds valuable historical documents and records.
