Scallop Fishery

Much of the culture and revenue in Digby today revolves around the scallop fishing industry. Our scallops are “World Famous.” Digby scallops are long famed as a “gourmet’s delight.” In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, ship building was a primary source of income. All of that changed, however, with the development of steamers. Consequently, the primary revenue of the town shifted from ship building circa 1906 when the commercial scallop fishery began. Digby’s Captain Roland Wormell is credited with the initial efforts in the industry including the scallop rake that he patented on June 28th, 1927. W.W Hayden, James Robinson, Henry Sibley, and John Hersey were among the first to drag scallops in Digby. Shown in this photo is Digby’s Scallop and the Herring Fleet circa 1960.
