Residents of Digby can attest to the power of storms in the Bay of Fundy. The area has a long history of lost ships and drownings. To alleviate this problem, construction began in 1911 for Digby’s Life Saving Station. The original crew consisted of eight men and the life boat “Daring”. According to Mike Parker, “the indomitable little vessel extracted many a daring rescue on the stormy Bay of Fundy waters” (Page 99 of Historic Digby). The building shown contained a cradle and marine railway for the lifeboat, supplies and tools necessary for the job, and living quarters for the crew. This station operated until its closure in 1970.
