1: William Handley Chipman built this house about 1828, and it has never been changed outside, though altered inside. It has had many different owners - Curry, Maxwell, Mr. Fred Johnson, Dr. W.H. Beckwith (a grand-son of the older). He married a Miss Wright for his second wife and after his death she married Dr. Fred Shankel, as his second wife. She is now a widow, but makes this her home. The Johnsons made the gardens very beautiful, and you can see from the snaps I took in 1940's that it is still a lovely-looking house. Very much like the Fowler house across the river.
